simply-thai.com - thai market - destination guides - Chiangmai Sight Seeing - Festivals - Bo Sang Umbrella & Samkamphaeng Handicrafts Festival - January - Bo Sang near Chiang Mai is renowned for its exquisitely hand-painted parasols made from mulberry paper and silk. The dainty parasols are decorated with beautiful floral motifs painted in dazzling colours. The designs are very distinctive and are instantly recognizable. During the festival, brightly decorated craft shops and stores line both sides of the 'high street' transforming Ban Bo Sang into a picturesque village decorated in the Lanna Thai style. Colourful umbrellas and traditional lanterns liven up the handicraft fair. In addition, there are contests, exhibitions, cultural performances, local entertainment, and a variety of shows by day and night. There is a grand procession of parasols and local products, a variety of handicrafts for sale, northern-style "Khan Toke" meals, and the Miss Bo Sang pageant.simply-thai.com - thai market - destination guides - Chiangmai Sight Seeing - Festivals - Thawai Village Woodcarving Fair - The greatest concentration of wood- carvers is perhaps still in the North, mainly in and around Chiangmai, although many skilled carvers may be found all over Thailand. Shops in Thailand's major cities feature a wide range of carved wood products from exquisitely carved furniture to more common items, such as salad bowls, wooden trays and lamp stands. A thriving export industry has grown from these products. One of the best known centers for wood carving around Chiangmai is at the village of Baan Thawai, just outside Hang Dong district town. Historically, most of the carvers were farmers who spent their free time making wooden objects, but now with the large number of export companies established in the village, carvers are employed from miles around. To get to Baan Thawai, drive south about 11 kilometers from Airport Plaza and turn left just before you reach the district office on the right side of the highway. Keep going for about 4 kilometers and you will be in Baan Thawai Village.

Ambushers, armed with tubs of water and water pistols wait at street corners for the unsuspecting or cruise the streets in pick-ups looking for a victim or a rival gang to soak. This water throwing lasts for three whole days - and even longer in the adjacent countryside. On the first day, firecrackers are let off at dawn and the people of Chiang Mai spring clean their houses. In the afternoon a parade of Buddha images from many Chiang Mai temples goes from the railway station to Wat Phra Singh. People toss lustral water scented with perfume and flowers to bathe the images as they pass along the streets. On the second day there are no ceremonies but in the afternoon sand is placed in the temple compound as a symbolic return of the sand carried out on the soles of shoes and feet of the people. The sand is made into a small chedi for the next day. The third day is the start of the New Year and early in the morning is a good time to visit the temples and watch people in traditional costume bringing offerings. Outside people place flags in the sand chedi as well as symbolic sticks of support under the Bo trees to bring good luck. In the afternoon the main government organizations hold a procession from the Yupparat School to honor the Chiang Mai governor at his residence by Nawarat Bridge.

This fair gives farmers, craftsmen and industrialists from all over the province the opportunity to show and sell their products. It is organized annually by the Chiangmai Provincial Administrative Authorities and a number of corporate sponsors: Boon Rawd Brewery Co. Ltd., The Park Hotel, Panna Dressing Design, and ITV. These fairs called the Red Cross and Winter Fair are common throughout Thailand, and Chiangmai, the nation's second city, rightly hosts a large and splendid one. As in days gone by, there will be stalls selling the best known foods and crafts from the province, entertainment galore, and games and activities for children and grown-ups alike. These fairs originated as temple fairs in the days before formal organization, when the temple was the hub of the community, much like the British church fete. In rural parts of Thailand these fairs are still centered in a temple. As Chiangmai has grown to be a large cosmopolitan city, many foreign consulates are invited to display their nations' wares.
